Getting the massive stones to stand up is needed – pure imagination. The woodworking method was chosen rather than masonry. Tongue and groove joints were used to slot stones together.
Thus, creating pits and jutting tenons. The timber pole arrangement acted as brace support. The stone was positioned and hoisted upward with ropes. Debris was poured into the pit to keep stones in their position.
The massive stone structure was originally constructed in three stages.
- The earthwork structure was built in the shape of a circular trench with a bank.
- Timber was arranged with postholes secured in the ground. The postholes were fenced by the bank.
- The stones were fastened.
The three construction stages got completed within 500 years [3000 BC to 2500 BC]. There is another story revealing it took six stages for constructing the henge, which lasted until 1500 BC.

The small inner stones are bluestone and sarsen stones [sandstone], which are different. Sandstone is available around 20 miles from this location but the bluestone is 140 miles away towards Southwest [Wales Preseli Hills].
How the massive rocks traveled and ended at this location is a major mystery. The weight of each bluestone is 2 to 5 tons and the sandstone weighs 25 tons.
There are many stories explaining how the massive stones ended in this location. One of them is that glaciers carried the bluestones but a reasonable explanation is that humans moved them over the rivers and land.
